White Papers The Opioid Crisis in New York State: The Journey to Solutions
Special Publications The Journal, Spring 2021 Issue “Violence” has become a topic of increasing concern in recent years, touching our nation in multiple ways and through diverse settings. Three years ago, NYSPA began a new “white paper initiative.” The intent was to direct psychology’s knowledge and expertise to specific topics currently at the forefront of our society. While a white paper is first and foremost aimed at raising general awareness and discussion, it may also have an impact on legislation. Through it the legislature and other public officials may gain an increased awareness of psychology’s ability to address an issue of major concern. As a result, a white paper from NYSPA has the potential to become a “win-win-win” for psychology, for NYSPA, for the NYS legislature, and ultimately for the people of New York State. The volume linked below, Psychological Perspectives on Violence: Prevention and Intervention, represents a project that began as a white paper and developed into something more. Under the leadership of Dr. Janet Sigal, with contributions from more than a dozen NYSPA members, and with editing support from Dr. John Hogan, what began as a white paper has morphed into a full, multi-chapter volume of The Journal: A Publication of the New York State Psychological Association. We hope you will read, learn, and appreciate the depth and breadth of “violence” as it is explored in this volume. Psychological science has much to say about the topic and, in turn, can offer much to inform our society. Most important, it can suggest potential solutions to this issue of great national concern.
