Cultivating the Internal Secure Base: Aligning Psychodynamic Technique with Attachment Theory in Group Therapy

In Attachment Theory, "the secure base" refers to an attachment figure acting as a safe foundation from which the child can explore the surrounding environment. The secure base facilitates a critical development process that becomes an internalized dynamic presence within the adult mind. This workshop explores how intrapsychic and interpersonal secure attachment can be cultivated by resolving resistances to progressive emotional communication. In group therapy, clinicians are presented with rich opportunities to work with clients' attachment dynamics to enhance self-understanding and resolve barriers to connecting meaningfully with others. Group therapy can provide clients with corrective emotional experiences that can create new pathways to relating to others in more satisfying ways. This workshop will enhance participants' abilities to facilitate this process by gaining skills in identifying client attachment problems and creating developmentally appropriate group therapy interventions. Key concepts and interventions will be demonstrated both experientially and didactically in this workshop.

Aaron E. Black, PhD, CGP

Aaron Black has a PhD in Clinical Psychology, is a Certified Group Psychotherapist, and has practiced for over 20 years in Rochester, NY. Dr. Black has published numerous papers on group psychotherapy, attachment theory, and psychological trauma, as well as presented at national and international conferences on the same topics. He is on the faculty of the Center for Group Studies in New York City and is a member of the board of directors of the Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health. In addition, Dr. Black has conducted numerous group workshop trainings in St. Petersburg, Russia, Rochester, NY, and through the American Group Psychotherapy Association. Dr. Black maintains a psychotherapy practice with individuals, couples, and groups, and provides supervision and consultation to other mental health professionals.
