PRE-CONVENTION WORKSHOP*

Differences Matter: Know Your Biases. Choose to Manage Them.

Friday, October 15, 2021
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM ET

Speaker
Dr. Greg Pennington

*The live workshop is only open to current NYSPA Council Members.
*A recorded portion of the workshop will be made available to Convention attendees at the conclusion of the Convention.

An interactive workshop focused on recognizing, understanding, and managing the dynamics of differences that appear in leadership within organizations. Videos, discussions, and small break-out rooms are utilized for reflection, in-depth learning, and action steps Council members can take next in their leadership roles. Participants will learn about Dr. Pennington’s D&ISight © Model that outlines five key assumptions to guide questions to increase insight and effectiveness managing dynamics of differences. These assumptions are:

  1. Differences matter;
  2. There are predictable stereotypes associated with differences;
  3. There are risks and rewards associated with presenting your whole self in some settings;
  4. What you do is important, how you do it is critical, who you know makes a difference; and
  5. Similarities and differences matter.

This workshop provides added value for NYSPA’s leadership as it focuses not merely on identifying biases but on how to manage differences effectively in order to further NYSPA’s work.
