Why is the best sex sometimes extra-marital? How do clinicians help patients negotiate their conflicting desires for extra-marital sexual bliss in individual and couples therapy? How do clinicians help patients that feel hurt, humiliated, and betrayed by their partners' desires to find sexual happiness with someone else outside of the relationship?  What happens to the dialectic of recognition and assertion that sustains healthy intersubjectivity in adult romantic relationships when one partner feels sexually frustrated and stifled while the other feels humiliated and betrayed by that sexual rejection? We don't want to shame individuals for desiring extra-marital sex nor do we want to excuse sexual betrayal. This soiree will begin to explore the clinical challenges that such difficult questions pose.

Dr. Lawrence Josephs is a professor at the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies of Adelphi Univeristy. He is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and a book reviewer for Psychoanalytic Psychology. His interest is in bridging psychoanalytic and research perspectives on adult romantic relationships. He is a member of the executive board of the Division of Psychoanalysis of NYSPA. He is in private practice in Manhattan.
