Suicide claimed the lives of more than 41,000 Americans in 2013, making it the 10th leading cause of death. Each year, the number increases, indicating that those who are in a position to prevent suicides need better training in recognizing the warning signs of suicide and in treating those who are having suicidal thoughts or engaging in suicidal behaviors. This program will introduce participants to evidence-based risk factors for and warning signs of suicidal crises.

Participants will have the opportunity to practice suicide assessment skills, to learn about available treatment options, to practice clinical decision-making, and to provide basic care to patients who are at-risk for suicide.

Dr. Owens is the Chairperson of the New York State Psychological Association (NYSPA) Suicide Prevention Task Force and is President of the NYSPA Division of Cognitive-Behavior Therapy.
