Presented by NYSPA's Division of Neuropsychology, the Pediatric Neuropsychology Committee and Teachers College, Columbia University present

Health Disparities, Trauma, Disruptive, and Criminal Behaviors and the Adolescent Brain 

This full day conference will examine neurobiological development as it pertains to changes in adolescent cognitive competence, behavioral self-control and applications to the law. Participants will be invited to reconsider adolescence - not only as a time of storm and stress, but as the second major opportunity to promote and nurture positive growth and development. The impact of biopsychosocial trauma upon the developing executive brain and its network will support proposals for appropriate treatment of disruptive, delinquent, and criminal behaviors. The morning will be devoted to developmental neuroscience, trauma, and their applications to the law. the afternoon will focus on implications for treatment, legal decision making, and current efforts toward juvenile and criminal justice reform. We welcome all members from the mental health, legal, medical, educational, child, teen, community, and juvenile justice advocacy professions.


Morning Keynote Address by Dr. Laurence Steinberg
Age of Opportunity: Lessons from the New Science of Adolescence

Laurence Steinberg, Ph.D., is the Laura H. Carnell Professor of Psychology at Temple University and an internationally recognized expert on psychological development during adolescence. His research has focused on a range of topics regarding contemporary adolescence, including adolescent brain development, risk-taking and decision-making, parent-adolescent relationships, adolescent employment, high school reform, and juvenile justice. He was a member of the National Academies’ Board on Children, Youth, and Families, and chaired their Committee on the Science of Adolescence. He helped to prepare the American Psychological Association’s amicus brief, which emphasized the neuroscience of the adolescent brain, thus paving the way for the Supreme Court to abolish the juvenile death penalty. Dr. Steinberg is the author of approximately 400 articles and essays on growth and development during the teenage years, and the author or editor of 17 books. His latest book, Age of Opportunity: Lessons from the New Science of Adolescence (2014), will inform the basis of his talk and will be available for purchase and book signing.

Afternoon Keynote Address by Dr. Kirkland Vaughans
Boys and Adolescent Males of Color: Poverty, Trauma and the Police

Kirkland C. Vaughans, PhD is on the faculty of the Derner Institute and the Postgraduate Program in Child, Adolescent and Family Psychotherapy at Adelphi University. He is a clinical supervisor at the National Institute for Psychotherapy, a school psychologist at the Hempstead High School, a founder of the NYSPA Division of Race, Culture and Ethnicity, and is in private practice in New York City. His expertise includes the school-to-prison pipeline, treatment implications and the intergenerational transmission of trauma among African Americans. He is the founding editor of the Journal of Infant, Child, and Adolescent Psychotherapy and is first-editor of the two volume book, The Psychology of Black Boys and Adolescents (2014), which will inform the basis for his talk and will be available for purchase and book signing.
