Like automobiles, firearms now possess a cultural and symbolic magnetism that makes them, for many Americas, the cornerstone of a way of life.  

The escalation of school shootings in America has become an overwhelming force in this culture of hate and fear. The statistics in the United States are staggering! In this webinar, our speakers emphasize the underlying dynamics, conscious and unconscious, in our individual and collective psyche, fueling the rise of gun violence to new heights. Dr. Conforti explores the dark archetypal force in the collective psyche, which results in the slaughter of innocent children. Dr. Garbarino highlights the multiple effects and sequela of gun violence creating a “war zone mentality." Dr. Kirk Schneider will elaborate on what he calls “the polarized mind.” which underlies our propensity to violence. 

All three panelists will have a discussion, and a live Q&A will follow immediately.

The webinar will be recorded, however, CE credit hours will only be available for the live webinar.

Objectives:

At the completion of this webinar, the participant will be able to:

1. List evidence (3 examples) of unconscious motivation toward from the work of Jung, Freud, and Elie Wiesel on the symbolic meaning of child sacrifice, and how this understanding may help us stem the tide of these killings.
2. Identify at least two (2) consequences of chronic trauma related to gun violence exposure.
3. List two (2) means of addressing the polarized mind and thus gun violence.
4. List two (2) legal and political strategies that have been shown to limit gun violence.

Featured Speakers: 

Dr. Michael Conforti is a Jungian analyst and the Founder and Director of The Assisi Institute.  He has been a faculty member at the C.G. Jung Institute – Boston, the C.G Jung Foundation of New York, and for many years served as Programs A pioneer in the field of matter-psyche studies, Dr. Conforti is actively investigating the workings of archetypal fields and the relationship between Jungian psychology and the New Sciences.

Dr. James Garbarino  Author of “Lost Boys: Understanding Why Our Sons Turn Violent & How We Can Save Them.” As a psychological expert witness in murder cases for the a past 30 years, he explores different aspects and multiple effects of youth violence, which has become an overwhelming problem in the United States. Understanding its origins in the developmental experience of children he proposes systemic and environmental changes to meet this growing crisis.

Dr. Kirk Schneider, Ph.D. is a leading spokesperson for existential-humanistic and existential-integrative psychology, an adjunct faculty member at Saybrook University and Teachers College, Columbia University, and a cofounder and current president of the award-winning Existential-Humanistic Institute. Dr. Schneider’s current focus, very much in keeping with Terror Management Theory, is on the existential bases of as well as alternatives to polarized states of being.

CE Information:

Three (3) CE credit hours are available for this program. Information regarding earning of CE credits will be sent out to all registered attendees at the conclusion of the event.  Please note that there is no additional fee for earning CE credits or receiving certificates.

The program organizer will present two CE Attendance Codes, the first at the beginning of the program and the second at the end of the program. To earn CE credit, attendees must correctly enter the two CE Attendance Codes in the post-event evaluation, which will be sent to all participants at the conclusion of the program. Individuals arriving more than 15 minutes after the start of the program or leaving early are not eligible for CE credit.
