“Hypersexuality-- A Diagnosis Without a Cause”

Hypersexuality has been included in the recent ICD 10 under diagnostic code F52,8 as "other sexual dysfunction not due to a substance or known physiological condition." The ICD 10 states that this diagnosis is applicable to "excessive sexual drive," "nymphomania," and "satyriasis." This talk will demonstrate the case that hypersexuality is a vague term, which has been used for moralistic purposes through the years. It creates harm by pathologizing both non-normative but benign sexual fetishes as well as common sexual practices and fantasies and by diverting attention from deeper mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).  In short, hypersexuality serves no useful purpose; it is a relic of a sex-phobic, moralistic past and adds no further utility in understanding or treating problematic behaviors.
