Empowering Families of the Mentally Ill
Long Island Psychological Consulting
New York State Psychological Association
Association of Hispanic Mental Health Professionals
This is a sit down dinner with open bar and entertainment at Verdi’s of Westbury on October 13, 2018 from 6:30 pm to 11pm.
There is no charge to attend. Donations will be accepted and given to organizations that help families of the mentally ill.
Having struggled for many years with miscommunications and numerous obstacles and stumbling blocks dealing with my own son, and, as a professional with extensive background working with mentally ill persons in many settings including psychiatric hospitals, how much more difficult is it for family members who encounter financial, language, cultural, and educational barriers and are unempowered and disenfranchised as they navigate a broken down mental health system?
I have invited professionals to talk about diagnoses that may require hospitalization or ER referral, medications, side effects, signs that someone may be decompensating, how to interact with and talk to hospital staff, patient and family rights in a hospital and other settings (e.g. community residences, safe houses, and other placements not in hospitals), questions to ask, records to keep, important information to have on hand, risk factors, aspects of the law that family members need to know, guardianship, power of attorney, etc.
Guests will have the opportunity to ask questions and share information during an open mike session.
And, of course, this is an opportunity to meet and make new friends, enjoy good food, an open bar, and dance to the music of a popular DJ!
