  Panel B: Litigating Trauma in Personal Injury
Presenter: Gerald Young, PhD
Dr. Gerald Young will discuss legal and psychological aspects in the litigation of trauma in psychological injury. First, he will review relevant U.S. Federal and New York state law pertaining to evidentiary standards and matters related to the psycholegal questions, including on causality. The major portion of the talk will be on PTSD and its assessment, including on appropriate tests to use in detecting possible malingering. The talk will consider the DSM-5 approach to PTSD and the extent to which the research supports it. Conclusions will emphasize the need to relate the evaluees’ symptoms and their functional consequences to the tort at hand, e.g., a negligent MVA. Dr. Young will emphasize the need to be comprehensive, scientific, impartial, and ethical in forensic report writing and testimony for court in this area of practice.

  Panel D: Assessing Trauma in Veterans in the Legal System
Presenters: Lewis Schlosser, PhD, ABPP. Edward Fernandez, PsyD, Jessica Coulter, Veteran Advocate

In this breakout session, Dr. Schlosser will review the procedures for evaluating military veterans who are candidates for police and public safety positions. This will include understanding the perspectives of the agency and the veteran, as well as identifying key collateral data that can assist in making a proper determination. Dr. Schlosser will also explain the different levels of service connection, and how that designation impacts on the military veteran candidate for a police and public safety position.
